Headboard and Behind-Bed LED Lighting

Give the bed a quiet focal point

A concealed line behind the headboard brings depth to the wall and a gentle backdrop to the room, without a fitting taking centre stage.

Behind-bed lighting is a detail you experience close up. A considered setback, controlled brightness and tidy joinery matter more than making every edge glow.

Plan the detail

Considered before
the lights go on.

Plan the lighting position, mounting and complete system around the way the space is used.

Decide where the glow should land

Lighting across the top of a headboard draws attention to the wall above; side returns can frame the bed more strongly. Test a single detail before adding more. Textured walls, upholstery and dark paint each change how the light reads.

Check the reclined sightline

Sit and lie in the bed at normal pillow height. Make sure you cannot look directly into the strip from either side, and check mirrors opposite. Keep the light source and wiring clear of bedding, movable furniture and any heat-sensitive finishes.

Keep the practical details within reach

Agree an accessible driver location and the route into the headboard before fitting it. Plan controls that can be used from bed and retain separate reading lights if needed. Follow manufacturer clearance and ventilation requirements rather than enclosing components inside upholstery.

Choose the mood

One space.
Different ways to light it.

Choose the lighting effect first, then check the strip, controls and installation together. These swatches explain the choices; they are not photographs of a product’s light output.

Useful to know

Your questions,
considered.

Can headboard lighting replace a reading light?

Treat the hidden glow as ambient lighting. If you read in bed, assess a dedicated reading light that reaches the page without requiring the whole headboard detail to be bright.

Should the strip run along the top or all around the headboard?

A top run gives a simpler wash above the bed, while side runs create a stronger frame. Test the intended effect and the view from the pillows before adding extra lengths.

Can I fit strip directly to an upholstered headboard?

Check the product’s mounting requirements and the headboard construction with the manufacturer or installer. Do not assume fabric is a suitable fixing surface or enclose power components without the required ventilation.

How do I make the light comfortable at night?

Conceal the source from reclined views and specify compatible dimming. Try the planned recess and wall finish at low output before completing the installation.
