Alcove and Niche LED Lighting

Give a small recess a big presence

Turn an alcove or indoor niche into a considered focal point, using concealed light to reveal the surface, shape and objects within it.

An alcove gives light a surface to work with. Its depth, proportions and finish determine whether the result feels like a quiet wash, a floating shelf or a statement display.

Plan the detail

Considered before
the lights go on.

Plan the light position, mounting and complete system around the way the room is used.

Choose what should catch the light

A top recess can wash down the back wall; a side detail may emphasise texture; a shelf-front position can bring light to objects. Test with the intended display in place, because an empty niche does not show the shadows created by books, ceramics or plants.

Build the concealment into the opening

Plan the lip, channel or shelf recess before decorating. Look into the alcove from its normal approach and seating positions. Dark paint may need a different balance from pale stone, while glossy surfaces can reflect the source.

Keep the location in the specification

Dry living-room niches and bathroom alcoves have different exposure conditions. For bathrooms, a qualified installer must assess the position and complete system. Near a fireplace, check appliance clearances and component temperature limits. Keep connections and drivers accessible wherever the niche sits.

Choose the mood

Different ways to light it.

Choose the lighting effect first, then check the strip, controls and installation together. These swatches explain the choices; they are not photographs of a product’s light output.

What about RGBW? RGBW combines colour with a separate white channel. The white tone and control options depend on the product. Compare RGB and RGBW strip options and check the complete system.

Swatches are illustrative, not exact colour temperatures. Screens, surfaces and installation details change how light appears. Colour availability and suitability vary by selected product.

Useful to know

Your questions,
considered.

Should an alcove be lit from the top or the sides?

Choose according to the surface and objects you want to show. A top wash, side grazing light and individual shelf lighting give different results, so compare a sample in the intended position.

Can I use these ideas in a bathroom alcove?

The design idea can transfer, but the specification may not. Have a qualified installer assess the bathroom location, moisture and full system. For shower niches, use the dedicated application guide.

How do I stop seeing a bright line inside the niche?

Design a recess or shielding edge around the normal sightlines, then test the actual depth and finish. A diffuser changes the appearance of the source but does not remove the need to consider glare.

What measurements should I send?

Provide the opening width, height and depth, any shelf positions and thicknesses, the proposed recess and cable entry. Add photos of the finish and the objects you want to display.
