Plan the detail
Considered before
the lights go on.
Bring the light position, mounting, location conditions and complete electrical system into one installation brief.
Choose a line that belongs to the structure
Try the inside face of a beam, a concealed upper edge or selected roof members rather than lighting every available surface. Check the view from chairs, the house and the garden entrance. A separate lighting zone for the dining area lets you treat it differently from the perimeter. If the roof has moving louvres, blinds or retractable parts, keep every proposed run and cable route clear of their movement.
Measure beams, posts and cable paths
List the length of each lit beam and the gaps between them. Record how the cable will travel down a post or back towards the building, including the distance to the intended power supply. Allow for caps, fixings and the strip’s permitted bend direction. For new structures, agree cable paths before finishes are fitted, with accessible connections and room for the structure’s normal movement.
Treat a roofed area as an outdoor location
A cover does not establish dry indoor conditions. A qualified installer should assess wind-driven rain, condensation, exposure and the complete electrical arrangement. Specify suitable mounting and protection for each connection, control and power supply, following manufacturer limits. Keep equipment reachable after the pergola is furnished and planted, and choose maintenance access that does not depend on taking the roof apart.
