Wall-Wash & Indirect LED Lighting

Let the surface become the feature.

Reveal texture, soften a backdrop or bring a quiet glow behind an architectural detail with carefully positioned LED light.

Wall-wash and indirect lighting concept
Lighting concept

Wall-wash and indirect LED lighting use reflected light to influence the room. A close grazing detail can emphasise texture, while a broader reflected effect asks for a different position. Start with the surface and the view you want to create, then test the strip and housing before fitting.

Plan the detail

Considered before
the lights go on.

Coordinate the light position, profile, construction and complete electrical system before the finishes are fixed.

Decide what the wall should reveal

Inspect the wall finish in daylight and with a sample light. Close placement can draw attention to texture and small imperfections; a broader wash depends on sufficient space and a suitable angle. Dark, pale, matt and glossy finishes respond differently. Set the effect around the actual wall rather than copying a distance from an unrelated installation.

Hide the source where people will see it

Check the strip from the doorway, across the room and from seated positions. Behind a panel or on a ledge, allow enough shielding to conceal both the source and its connections. Check reflections in glass, stone and screens nearby. Coordinate brackets and mounting details so they do not interrupt the intended light pattern.

Quote the wall and the lighting detail together

Send the wall width and height, photographs of the finish, the proposed mounting position and a section through the recess or ledge. Include individual strip lengths, accessible supply locations and control preferences. For a wet or exterior setting, describe the exposure so the whole assembly can be assessed for that location.

Warm white

A softer white-light mood. Compare a sample with the materials and other lighting in your room.

NW

Natural white

A more neutral white-light appearance. Check the selected product and test it on the surface you want to light.

Cool white

A cooler white-light appearance. Consider how it works with the room’s finishes and existing lights.

CCT

Adjustable white

Change the white-light tone using compatible CCT controls. The available range depends on the selected strip.

Colour

Explore colour as a decorative layer with a compatible strip and controller. Keep practical task lighting in the scheme.

Explore colour

What about RGBW? RGBW combines colour with a separate white channel. The white tone and control options depend on the product. Compare RGB and RGBW strip options and check the complete system.

Swatches are illustrative, not exact colour temperatures. Screens, surfaces and installation details change how light appears. Colour availability and suitability vary by selected product.

Useful to know

Your questions,
considered.

What is the difference between grazing and washing a wall?

A close grazing position tends to emphasise texture. A wash aims for a broader spread across the surface. The result depends on geometry and finish, so assess a sample rather than treating the terms as a guaranteed effect.

Will lighting make wall imperfections more visible?

It can, especially when light travels close along the surface. Trial the proposed position on the finished wall and discuss any preparation needed before the lighting is fixed.

Can LED strip wash a tall wall evenly?

That cannot be assumed from the strip type alone. Wall height, setback, optics and surface reflectance affect the result. Share the dimensions and desired appearance so the approach can be assessed.

Do I need an aluminium profile for indirect lighting?

Follow the selected strip requirements and choose a housing appropriate to the mounting detail. A profile can support a neat installation, but it does not by itself guarantee the desired wash or suitability for moisture.
